Gayle Baird is a Scottish visual artist, filmmaker and writer whose work explores spirituality, mental health, female experience and the search for freedom.
Based in Edinburgh, Gayle works across ink, acrylic, oils and photography, creating mystical, narrative images that explore the inner life and our spiritual relationship with the natural world.
She studied Drama at the University of Exeter and completed an MA in Film Directing at Edinburgh College of Art, followed by Advanced Film Practice at Edinburgh Napier University. Her background in storytelling and film informs the theatrical composition and symbolic language of her visual work.
Her practice is shaped by her recovery from anorexia, bulimia, psychosis and schizophrenia, including almost a year spent in a psychiatric hospital in Edinburgh. Drawing on shamanism, meditation, travel and experiences with psychedelics, she explores transformation, inner guidance, self-acceptance and the mystical connections between human beings, animals and the living world.
